While watching Netflix original series, Abstract: The Art of Design, students sketched ideas for innovative designs. Each class produced a wide variety of designs for illustration, shoes, architecture, and more. We have cardboard chaos in 6th period and I am loving it! Everyone is having fun experimenting with structural problem-solving and some really nice sculptures are coming together. We looked at the Cubist works of Pablo Picasso to draw inspiration for geometrical forms that have an emotion as subject matter. After completing their structures, students are using paint to help convey the emotion through color. Second period Art 1 and 2, and 3rd period Art 2 are in the middle of a painting workshop to develop skills for an upcoming portrait unit called Back in the Good Old Days. Students will ask for stories from a member of the elderly community and incorporate symbolism from the narratives into a portrait for them. We are using a still life painting of oranges to guide our learning of painting techniques so students can combine these skills with proportions and likeness in portrait painting. To kick off this semester, students in all classes were sent on a journey to create forced perspective photos! I took some interesting photos of the process and you can find the students' results here on Artsonia. Technology Coordinator Keith Barnes is in Art! Mr. Barnes & I are assisting students in creating digital artworks this week. Students began looking at artists who make art about power, some of which use digital media. After brainstorming ideas with students, it was time to learn some skills. Here he is helping Art 1 students, Kevin Bratcher and Britney Thompson.
Today Advanced Art had a visitor from Spalding University's KyCAD division, Ben Rich, shared information on the qualities that make KyCAD a special Art school. Ben discussed the program's curriculum, media emphasis options, costs, perks, and more. After a presentation Ben gave our young artists feedback on portfolio work they brought in.
This week all Art classes have in the process of creating contest posters for our Community/Positive Behaviors Unit. This unit began last week with discussion about examples of community and how artists create objects that shape lives and communities. We are focusing on building a positive community in and outside our classroom by participating in Red Ribbon Week, SafeSchools Week, and the Adopt-a-Highway contest to raise awareness about the harmful effects of drug use, bullying, and littering with our artworks. Posters will be submitted Friday! All Art classes and my Sophomore Academic Time students pulled together to make class banners for the pep rally Friday. It was decades day of spirit week so some students are also showing off their outfits. Art classes were held outside by the softball field today so students could apply previously learned value, overlapping, and texture techniques to observational drawings. We focused specifically on the branch systems of the trees to target those drawing skills. |
