Art 1 students worked towards this learning target for two days: I can apply value techniques to create an observational drawing outdoors:trees & textures.(DOK4) We had nice weather to enjoy the outdoor drawing study. Fifth period students didn't have the tolerance for the heat that came later in the day so they focused on perspective and drew in the lobby.

Students in Art 2, 3, and 4 used dry-erase score boards to evaluate the effectiveness of their classmates print series. This group critique allows students to share their evaluation using relevant art vocabulary and encourages discussion among classmates. Did you know we paint on the table in Art?! For a monoprinting series, Art 2, 3, and 4 students used the flat surface of the tables to create an image. We then created prints of the image by laying paper over the top and applying pressure to complete the transfer. This printmaking technique is unique in that it results in only one original. Students were of course taught to properly clean up, and no table was harmed during this art making process!
Today students got an exercise in describing artwork because often students like to put their opinions into descriptions and/or describe too little about a work. Students rotated between being the artist and witness. The witness described the image to the artist who had to draw only what they were being told. Without peeking! Students were all quite surprised to turn and see what they were actually drawing. This lesson winds down procedures and soon students will all be making their own art! Throughout the year I have documented all the dry-erase drawings that come and go over time. You may find them here!
For the rest of the school year, students in all Art classes are working on animations. Students developed concepts for animations within two big ideas: life and death, and visual culture. We discussed multiple facets of both the topics then groups were off to brainstorm together. Many groups are building elaborate props, others are creating their own drawings to animate with paper or dry-erase markers. We are fighting through the testing chaos and making some really exciting work! You may watch this year's animations here. Field Trip to the Speed Art Museum with Art 3 & 4 - Special thanks to Anne Tilford and First Sergeant Siler for driving the vans for us and joining our tour! Students had a blast looking at the incredible collection our local Speed has to offer. I must admit though, I wonder if having Starbucks on campus was their favorite part. I'm so proud of these students, some of them are responsible for helping fund the trip by providing items for a holiday sale back in December. I am so excited to have this visitor in Art this week! Students have the privilege of experiencing debate with a National award-winning debate competitor who was the first competitor sent to Nationals for my alma mater, Murray State University. He is also my "little" brother! Cody Wall has introduced key characteristics of debate and its structure then judged our students who had speaking parts. Everyone did an excellent job providing evidence and presenting their arguments for the following art-related topics: This house believes Art should be a career pathway, This house believes in Donald Trump's proposed budget cut for the NEA, Abstract Expressionism is a valid form of art. Also this week, Art History class performed their melodramas! This slide show is the second one below. Tonight we had our school-wide art exhibit! Collections (the exhibit title) will be a yearly event to celebrate the talent and hard work of our students. Listed and pictured below are winners. Best in Show: Jessica Major // Best 2D: Kelsey Crosby // Best 3D: Taylor Thompson Honorable Mentions: Riana Higdon, Jacob Jones, Cierra Leach, and Elizabeth Dinkins In 6th period we looked at a series by artist Robert Longo called Men in Cities. The gestural poses were our inspiration for the action photos. I adapted this lesson from a Tim Bogatz unit on Art of Education. Instead of just being a study of the figure, we made our silhouettes go places in a unit called Where Am I? They traced their silhouettes, added details, and then a background of their choice responding to the action of the figure. Here are some of our action shots. Oh yeah, I threw nerf balls at some of them to get the shots! Today we also had Art Club members competing in a paper airplane contest! |
